Poema del Mar Aquarium
Poema del Mar is a modern large-scale aquarium located directly at the port of Las Palmas. It showcases marine worlds from around the globe across approximately 12,500 m², from tropical reefs to the deep sea. A highlight is the enormous panoramic window, behind which you can see sharks, rays, and schools of fish. The visit is worthwhile for families as well as on rainy days.
Poema del Mar is located at Muelle Sanapú in the harbor district of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It's not far from Playa de Las Canteras and the Santa Catalina neighborhood. It was opened at the end of 2017 by the Kiessling family, who also operate Loro Parque and Siam Park on Tenerife. The name references the work "Poema del Atlántico" (also "Poema del Mar") by Gran Canaria artist Néstor Martín-Fernández de la Torre.
Across approximately 12,500 m², the aquarium displays around 35 ecosystems from all the world's oceans with several hundred species. The exhibition is divided into three areas: ocean surface habitats, the deep sea, and freshwater worlds. Particularly impressive is the massive panoramic window, behind which sharks, rays, and large schools of fish glide by. A visit to the deep-sea section is a highlight of the day for many.
Poema del Mar is also committed to marine conservation. Among other things, it operates a sea turtle hospital where injured or sick animals are cared for. Recovered animals are later released back into the ocean.
