Playa El Veril

Quiet beach with golden sand between Playa del Inglés and San Agustín. Less hustle and bustle than Playa del Inglés, but with space, calm water, and giant lizards on the promenade. Playa El Veril is a relaxed alternative to the large beaches in the south.

Playa El Veril is located in the southeast of Gran Canaria, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana. It forms the transition between Playa del Inglés and San Agustín and begins directly behind the liveliest part of the resort. If you continue from there, you reach a more open, quieter coastal zone.

The Beach

Playa El Veril actually consists of several small, sheltered coves. They are separated from each other by breakwaters. The first cove is called Playa El Cochino, the second Playa El Veril; officially, all sections are often listed under the name Veril. The coves are artificially created: light sand was brought here from Playa de Las Canteras in Las Palmas and laid over the originally dark, stony ground. This has created soft, golden-yellow sand that is mixed with darker sand in places. The water is clear and calm thanks to the breakwaters, and the entry is shallow. This makes the beach pleasant for children too.

Facilities

At the end of the second cove, you'll find the facilities of a town beach: showers, toilets, and a small kiosk. Sun loungers can be rented, but they're often quickly taken, so come early. A ramp makes access easier for people with limited mobility. Above is a shopping center with restaurants, a supermarket, and cafés, from whose terraces you have a wide view over the coast of Playa del Inglés. You can reach the beach via stairs from the promenade or from the shopping center.

Giant Lizards on the Promenade

A special sight: on the stones, in the rocks and bushes along the beach promenade, you often see large, striking lizards. These are Gran Canaria giant lizards (Gallotia stehlini, in Spanish simply Lagarto canario). They're easy to observe, especially in the sun on the stones. Keep your distance, don't feed them, and don't touch them - even though they're sometimes accustomed to people.

The Promenade: from Playa del Inglés to San Agustín

The beach is located on the continuous coastal path Paseo Costa Canaria. It runs from the end of Avenida de Tirajana in Playa del Inglés to the beach of San Agustín, about 5 kilometers further east. The promenade is fully paved and without major inclines, so it's easy to walk. It connects:

A walk from Playa del Inglés to San Agustín beach is about 9 kilometers long and takes about 2 hours with only minimal elevation change.

Getting There

On foot: From Playa del Inglés via the promenade, ideal as a morning or evening walk. From the center of Playa del Inglés, it's about 5 to 10 minutes to the beginning of the coves.

By bus: Global line 66 runs from Maspalomas via San Agustín to the airport, line 1 connects Las Palmas with the south to Puerto de Mogán. You can find current times at Global.

By car: There are free parking options nearby in the side streets; in high season they can be scarce. Don't leave valuables visible in your car.

Practical Tips

Sun and wind: There's hardly any shade. Sun protection, a hat, and water belong in your bag. In strong wind, the sand can be blown around.

Best time: Early in the morning or late afternoon, when it's cooler and quieter.

Food: The shopping center above the beach and the kiosk offer food and drinks; the selection at the beach itself is limited.

For whom: Couples, walkers, photographers, families, and anyone who wants a relaxed beach day without much hustle and bustle.

Our Tip

Plan Veril as part of a beach walk: from Playa del Inglés to Veril, on to San Agustín, have lunch or coffee there, and take the bus back. Keep your camera ready along the way, as the giant lizards make a great subject.
