An essential stop on the way to the heart of the island

If you leave the coastal towns of the south and head into the mountainous interior via the winding panoramic road GC-60, you'll inevitably come across the Mirador de la Degollada de las Yeguas. Located at around 842 meters altitude, this viewpoint serves as the perfect window into Gran Canaria's dramatic volcanic origins.

Landscape contrasts: From canyon to dunes

From the spacious viewing platform, a vast panorama unfolds: Directly at your feet lies the Barranco de Fataga, a deeply carved gorge that is often called the island's "Grand Canyon" due to its steep rock walls. The view sweeps across the valley with the historic palm village of Arteara to the striking mountains in the center of the island. Turn around in the opposite direction and your eye follows the canyon's outlet all the way to the deep blue Atlantic Ocean and the golden sand dunes of Maspalomas.

A window to the universe

The viewpoint officially bears the title Mirador Astronómico. Due to its geographical location, clean air, and very low light pollution in the mountains, this spot is a magnet for romantics and amateur astronomers at night. Special information panels on site explain the night sky to visitors and help identify constellations and planets above Gran Canaria.

  • Combination tip: You can ideally combine this stop with a visit to the prehistoric open-air museum Mundo Aborigen (just a few minutes away) or continue on to the picturesque village of Fataga.
