Maspalomas Pride and Winter Pride

In May and November, the south of Gran Canaria celebrates Pride. With a parade, stage shows at Yumbo, pool parties, and beach events. This applies to both festivals: plan early, as accommodation and flights become scarce and expensive.

Two festivals, one center

Gran Canaria is one of Europe's most popular LGBTQ+ destinations, and this becomes especially clear twice a year: during Maspalomas Pride in May and during Winter Pride in November. Both festivals last around a week, both are centered at the Yumbo Centrum in Playa del Inglés, and both attract visitors from across Europe. The Yumbo then becomes stage, party strip, and meeting point all in one. One thing applies to all: the Yumbo is open to everyone, and especially during Pride times many heterosexual visitors also come for the atmosphere and shows.

Maspalomas Pride (May)

Maspalomas Pride takes place every year in May and is considered one of Spain's largest Pride festivals. The organizer is the Freedom association, and the 2026 edition celebrated its 25th anniversary.

  • Parade: It starts at Avenida de Tirajana, runs along Avenida de Gran Canaria, and ends at Yumbo Centrum. Afterwards, the free party begins there at Plaza de Yumbo, the "Pride Park".
  • Program: The week offers pool parties during the day and "Pride Night Live" on the Yumbo stage in the evenings with shows, drag acts, and guests. There are also award ceremonies, exhibitions, and talks on human rights in the first half of the week, and a closing show at the end.
  • Next date: For 2027, the period May 3-9 is mentioned, with the parade expected on May 8 at 4 PM, starting at Hotel Riu Palace and ending at the Yumbo. Both are estimates, so check the official information.

Winter Pride (November)

Winter Pride is considered the last major Pride festival in the European calendar and has been taking place since 2014. It lasts at least seven days. Despite "Winter" in the name, November is usually mild, and a beach holiday is still possible.

  • Pride Walk: The parade starts at the beginning of Avenida de Tirajana near the dunes and ends at Yumbo Centrum, where the celebration continues. Like the stage shows at the Yumbo, it's free to attend.
  • Program: The festival includes stage shows with international artists, drag acts and DJs, pool parties like the Tropicana Pool Party, a talent competition, a sports program with padel, crossfit and bowling, as well as excursions. Admission is charged for pool parties and special events.
  • On 11.11: To mark the start of carnival season, people often gather in costumes at the gay beaches.
  • Next date: The dates for 2027 were not yet confirmed at the time of my research.

More than just parties: beach and daytime program

There's also plenty happening during the day. The gay beach behind the dunes at Kiosk No. 5 (formerly No. 7) is particularly lively during these weeks, with a great atmosphere and mixed crowd. If you want a lounger and/or parasol: the earlier you get to the beach (and that really means early morning), the better. The beach is also a nudist zone. The beach bar at the lighthouse is also popular for winding down the beach day, and the cafés and bars at the Yumbo and CITA Shopping Center fill up.

Planning and costs

  • Book early: During Pride times, many hotels in Playa del Inglés and Maspalomas are fully booked months in advance. More on this in the guide "Where to stay?".
  • Expensive: Flight and hotel prices rise significantly during major events. Compare multiple booking sites and check whether booking flight and accommodation separately is cheaper. There's a separate article on this under "Gran Canaria on a budget".
  • Close to the action: If you're going out at the Yumbo at night, it's best to stay in Playa del Inglés within walking distance. If you want a quiet night's sleep, choose Maspalomas or Meloneras and take a short taxi or bus ride.
  • Admission: Pride Walk, parade, and the Yumbo stage are free, but you need tickets for pool parties and special events. Only buy them from official organizers.

Tips for Pride week

  • Don't overdo it: A Pride week is a marathon, not a sprint. Even so, you'll probably need a holiday from your holiday afterwards. Treat yourself to a day off now and then - even if it's hard to resist.
  • Valuables: Pickpockets operate in crowds. Keep your phone and wallet close to your body - best to leave your phone at the hotel/apartment.
  • Rules in the dune area: Even during Pride: The dunes are a nature reserve and may only be entered on marked paths! The dunes are not a cruising spot!
  • Respect: Don't photograph anyone without permission, especially not at the nudist beach.

Our tip

You can only experience one of the two festivals? May offers the big parade and summer vibes, November offers calmer weather and the Pride Walk. If you want to party, both are perfect. With a bit of advance planning, accommodation and travel will work out!
