Where to stay? North or South?
Las Palmas, Playa del Inglés, Maspalomas, Puerto de Mogán and the mountain villages compared

Gran Canaria is often called a "miniature continent," and this applies to accommodation as well. The south is sunny, dry, and well-developed for tourism. The north and the capital have more changeable weather, but are livelier and more urban. In the mountains it becomes quiet and cooler. Your choice of location therefore determines how your holiday will feel.
Las Palmas: City, Beach and Culture
The capital is the perfect option for anyone who wants real big-city life combined with a beach holiday. Playa de Las Canteras is a kilometers-long, lively city beach with a promenade full of cafés and restaurants. In the historic old town of Vegueta and on the shopping street Triana, you'll experience authentic Canarian culture, history, and authentic tapas bars away from pure tourism.
- Good for:
City travelers, culture fans, couples, anyone who wants to manage without a car - Advantages:
Lots of choice for eating and going out, good bus connections, lively year-round, plus the Poema del Mar at the harbor - Disadvantages:
The weather is more changeable than in the south, parking is difficult, the beaches aren't as expansive as in the south - Tip:
Santa Catalina and the area around Las Canteras are most practical for vacationers. Vegueta is quieter and more historic.
Playa del Inglés: The Lively Tourism Center
This famous district of Maspalomas is the tourist heart of the south coast. It's located directly on the eastern part of the dunes and offers everything for a classic, bustling beach holiday: hotels in every price range, large shopping centers (like the Yumbo Center), countless restaurants, bars, and a vibrant nightlife.
- Good for:
Families, couples, groups, and sun seekers - Advantages:
Plenty of sunshine, wide selection, short distances to beach and dunes, good bus connections - Disadvantages:
Very touristy, little Canarian flair, noisy in some areas - Tip:
If you prefer it quieter, book in the outskirts or toward Meloneras.
Maspalomas & Meloneras: Dunes, Lighthouse and Luxury
West of Playa del Inglés lies the namesake, quieter heart of the region with the famous dune reserve and the historic lighthouse (Faro). Directly adjacent is the modern district of Meloneras. Here, spacious bungalow complexes set in greenery and large 4- and 5-star luxury resorts along an elegant waterfront promenade dominate.
- Good for:
Couples, those seeking peace, wellness vacationers, connoisseurs - Advantages:
Natural scenery with the dunes, high-quality hotels, relaxed atmosphere - Disadvantages:
Usually more expensive, quieter in the evenings, often need a car or bus for excursions - Tip:
For a beach walk to the dune landscape, Maspalomas is ideal.
Puerto de Mogán: the Harbor Village
Whitewashed houses, bougainvillea, canals, and a small marina: Puerto de Mogán is often called "Little Venice." It's quiet, pretty, and photogenic, with a small beach and many fish restaurants. There's a market on Fridays.
- Good for:
Couples, those seeking peace, photographers, fish lovers - Advantages:
Charming townscape, cozy atmosphere, very good weather in the southwest - Disadvantages:
Less choice of accommodation and nightlife, somewhat remote - Tip:
Ideal in combination with a rental car to explore the coast.
Mountain villages: nature, tranquility and authenticity
Tejeda, Artenara, Teror or Fataga offer the authentic Gran Canaria: fincas and "casas rurales", cave houses, hiking trails and spectacular landscapes. It's cooler here, even fresh in the evenings.
- Good for:
Hikers, nature lovers, those seeking peace and quiet, independent travelers - Advantages:
Authentic atmosphere, silence, starry skies, fewer tourists - Disadvantages:
Difficult without a car, hardly any beach proximity, less choice in the evening - Tip:
Ideal as a supplement: a few nights in the mountains, the rest by the sea.

Our tip
For your first visit, Maspalomas or Playa del Inglés work well for sun and beach, complemented by two or three days in Las Palmas or in the mountains. If you want to experience the island in all its diversity, split your stay between two locations. Since distances are manageable, this works well by bus or rental car.
